Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can vary in form and severity. It can become a controlling force in your life which both stems from anxiety and creates anxiety.

Obsessions and Compulsions

OCD consists of two main parts, obsessions and compulsions.

Obsessions are repetitive, unwanted thoughts that result in irrational fears and anxiety. Some people may refer to these thoughts as intrusive thoughts.

Compulsions, however, are repetitive behaviours that are carried out to reduce the anxiety caused by the obsession. For example, excessive cleaning, counting or checking and repeating tasks and actions. Trichotillomania (compulsive hair pulling) may also be classified under the general umbrella of OCD.

It is possible to experience obsessive thoughts only and not feel the urge to carry out a compulsion. For instance, worrying excessively about germs or illness, or fearing causing harm to others.

Hypnotherapy for OCD

The symptoms of OCD can come and go. Anyone affected will recognise that the obsessions and compulsions are worse when they are stressed or anxious about other things, such as work, finances or relationships.

Hypnotherapy can help enormously by reducing the underlying anxiety that feeds the behaviours and thought patterns, enabling you to regain a sense of normality and control.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a combination of talking therapy and hypnosis, aimed at encouraging you to focus on how you want things to be. In the talking part of the session I use solution-focused questioning techniques to help you imagine your preferred future, a future where you have a more useful perspective on the quality of your life. This positive psychotherapy work is then enhanced by the application of hypnosis, a wonderful state of deep relaxation. By encouraging you to think and express yourself positively we can help to reduce your anxiety. As the anxiety reduces the OCD fades away.
